The Japanese Akoya is a saltwater cultured pearl similar to that of a Mikimoto just unable to carry the name as it is trademarked. Akoya pearls are lustrous, lovely and of caliber. Japanese Akoya pearls are usually white, grey, creme and even blue. However, black pearls are never seen. The only source for natural color black pearls are the Tahitian islands that are a part of French Polynesia. However, these black Tahitian South Sea pearls are not available in the smaller sizes. As such, the inventive Japanese pearl farmers have come up with a process to enhance their pearls to make them black. This method is known as a French Dye, a process which is guaranteed for life by the Japan Pearl Exporter's Association and does not affect the value.
